SUP

Over the weekend I had a little down time, it was a beautiful day outside, and I finally decided to try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP).  There’s a rental place in town and I’ve driven by many, many times, but never stopped in.

It was about $15 for the first hour…I figured one hour would be plenty to test it out and get my bearings (or balance).

I scooped up a life jacket and then one of the employees got me set up with a paddle and a board.  She put the board in the water, told me to get on it (kneeling), and then pushed me off shore and onto the water.

OK…here we go!

The water in the bay lake was gross.  A lot of algae and yuck…

That motivated me to keep my balance and NOT fall in!  Spoiler alert – I did not fall in.  Surprisingly I was one of the few people who actually wore a lifejacket.  I didn’t want to take any chances.  (Once a lifeguard, always a lifeguard.)

I paddled with great trepidation and then got a bit more comfortable and decided to paddle out onto the lake.  Sunday in summer means a lot of boat traffic.  As a fishing boat started coming near me, I was saying to myself :”Oh no. Oh no. No, no, no…” And that’s because I could see that the wake was coming towards me!

No problem…I kept it together and just took my time.  I only lasted on the lake for a little while and then returned to the calm waters of the bay.  As I saw fish swimming under me, all I could think about was the week’s worth of Shark Week specials I’d watched in the past 7 days…and videos of people who see a shark swim under their SUP.  And then I reminded myself I was in a lake.

Paddle, paddle, paddle.

SUP is a good arm and core workout.  And my legs got some stability training.  I think even my toes got a workout because I was gripping the board.

I definitely want to try again and stay out a little longer.  And maybe even jump into the lake!
